Mike Doughty Fall Tour Dates...
This little nugget from Mike Doughty appeared in my inbox this a.m.:
Dearest Friends,
(I've always called you guys in the audience "friends," and I'm happy that I can do so again, now that John McCain isn't running around beginning every tedious speech by saying, "My friends..." But I digress)
Hey, so I'm a singer/songwriter, right? Well, check this out. It's a crazy idea, but it just might work. I'm going to go play some shows in the Fall. In October and November. Now, don't freak out. It's gonna be OK. I promise.
I'll be doing The Question Jar Show, which is, as most of you probably know, me and my cello player Andrew "Scrap" Livingston answering questions that the audience puts in a jar before the show. No question too strange! No topic off limits!
The pre-sale for fan club peeps is gonna start on July 29, and the general public can buy tix on August 4. Them dates is below.

Mike

Monsters of Folk Tor Dates...
Monsters of Folk was born on the road five years ago when My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, and singer/songwriter M. Ward toured together and regularly sat in on each other’s sets. Now armed with the eclectic collaborations that make up their debut album, the illustrious quartet will reconvene for several Fall tour dates. Throughout each show of the tour, the four members will be switching instruments and trading roles, maintaining the freewheeling and highly collaborative spirit of their work together thus far. In the spirit of folk-camaraderie, Monsters of Folk is partnering with Air Traffic Control, a resource for musicians' philanthropic and social change work, to donate monies raised from ticket sales. The band will be donating $1 from every ticket sold on the tour to local non-profits.
"On a daily basis, we see how hard organizations like these work to make our communities, country and world a better place." said Erin Potts, the organization's executive director. "In a time when economic resources are harder to come by and organizations are overwhelmed by urgency and need, the Monsters of Folk tour's charitable activities are a significant way to energize and support the tireless and often overlooked work that these organizers are doing.”
Pre-sale tickets for the US and Canada shows will be available beginning Tuesday, July 28th, followed by the public on-sale beginning Friday, July 31st. Tickets for the UK / EU shows will be available beginning Tuesday, July 27. For more info please visit www.monstersoffolk.com. For a complete list of charities and for more information on Air Traffic Control, please visit www.atctower.net.

Monsters of Folk to Release Debut...
Monsters of Folk – comprised of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter M.Ward – will be releasing their first collaborative album on September 22nd. The self-titled effort was recorded in Malibu, CA and Omaha, NE, and produced by Mogis. Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band. The record will be released in North America on Shangri-La Music, and internationally on Rough Trade (UK/Europe), Spunk Records (Australia/New Zealand) and P-Vine Records (Japan). The musicians have made a track from their forthcoming self-titled debut album available for FREE. Their website, http://www.monstersoffolk.com is giving away the song, titled “Say Please”, to anyone who visits the site and types “please” into the request form.
Monsters of Folk began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004. Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock ‘n’ roll was newly born, the tour was called “An Evening With: Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,” although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the “Monsters of Folk Tour.” While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour’s completion. Instead, the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music’s most exciting and essential albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning & Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket’s Z & Evil Urges; M. Ward’s Post War and Hold Time. Never ones to forget their promise, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first recorded effort. The result is as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be.
All four members play every instrument on the album, supplying everything from drum kills to cascading backing vocals. The songs – some road-worn fables, some intimate and intricate with electronic elements, some woozy and sun-soaked – are everything one expects from these four musical minds collaborating together. The album exudes a warm, organic spaciousness, filled by brilliant choruses, intoxicating harmonies and effortless melodies, as each member brings his own strengths to the table to create one perfect whole.

Dan Auerbach Announces Winter Tour...

The tour, which includes shows at New York City’s Webster Hall, Nashville’s Cannery Ballroom and Philadelphia’s Theater of the Living Arts, arrives on the heels of Auerbach’s critically acclaimed solo debut Keep It Hid, recently released on Nonesuch. The album received wide praise from The New York Times, NPR’s Fresh Air, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Opening for Auerbach on the fall dates are Justin Townes Earle and Jessica Lea Mayfield. Please see below for tour details.
Keep It Hid was produced and engineered by Auerbach at his studio Akron Analog and features him playing a variety of instruments, including drums, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. Many of Auerbach’s friends and family play on the album, including his uncle James Quine, who contributes vocal harmony and electric guitar on the track “Street Walkin.” Other musicians include Jessica Lea Mayfield, who sings on the track “When the Night Comes,” and Bob Cesare, who plays drums on “Whispered Words,” a song originally written by Auerbach’s father. Of the recording process Auerbach states, “I wanted a live, organic sound. Rakim Set to Drop 'The Seventh Seal'...
As reported on Billboard.com:
"The Seventh Seal," the long-anticipated album by rap legend Rakim, is slated for release in the fall, Billboard has learned exclusively. The project's first single, "Holy Are You," will drop July 28.
The album is being released on Rakim's Ra Records label in a joint venture with Tuscan Villa Entertainment, headed by industry veterans Ron Kyle and Lennie Petze. In turn, Tuscan Villa is entered in a joint venture pact with SMC Recordings whose principals are Ralph Tashjian and Will Bronson. Handling distribution for Rakim's album is Fontana/Universal Music Group. The rapper is managed by Matthew Kemp.
The rapper signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label in 2001. Featured on the 2002 top 10 R&B single "Addictive" by Aftermath labelmate Truth Hurts, Rakim later parted ways with Dre and Aftermath and his album was never released. Rakim - best known as one-half of the rap duo Eric B. & Rakim - has not released a new studio album save for 2008's mostly live set, "The Archive: Live, Lost & Found," which included four previously unreleased songs.

Justin Townes Earle Plans Maumee Stop...
Mark August 27th, 2009 as the day, critically-acclaimed, singer songwriter Justin Townes Earle (son of Steve Earle)is rolling into town to play The Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio. He is sure to be a force in the Alt-Country arena for a long time to come. He will be appearing fresh on the heels of The Big Surprise Tour, an amazing outing that places him on a bill with Old Crow Medicine Show, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings and The Felice Brothers...impressive company!
From Bloodshot Records:
Within the first song on Justin Townes Earle’s second album Midnight At the Movies, you just know you’re hearing something special, that you are party to the unknown and exhilarating paths being explored by an artist on the creative ascendancy. Midnight At The Movies displays an adeptness and musical sophistication of remarkable, organic breadth and is as lyrically sharp as a lover’s tongue as she is walking out the door.
If you didn’t look at the songwriting credits, you’d swear the songs were penned on the stoop of a one-pump filling station in dust bowl era Oklahoma, the smoke-filled song and dream factories of Tin Pan Alley, or at the back door of Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge in Nashville. Justin effortlessly taps the romanticism imbued in the beaten-soled travelogues and mythos of Woody Guthrie; the lounging around a campfire at a work camp and the edgy angst of a wintry Minneapolis (yeah, just try to get that mandolin line from the cover of the ‘Mats’ “Can’t Hardly Wait” out of your head.)

Strict Joy: Swell Season Follow Up to Once...
The Swell Season, the Oscar-winning duo of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech ingÈnue Marketa Irglova, are putting the finishing touches on 'Strict Joy,' (Sept 29/Anti- Records), the follow-up to their beloved, surprise hit 2007 film and gold-certified soundtrack 'Once.' The twelve new, original songs on 'Strict Joy' were recorded last year and document a time of great change and tumult.
'Strict Joy,' which borrows its name from a work by Irish poet James Stephens, a work by Irish poet James Stephens, was co-produced by Hansard and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), and recorded mostly at Katis' Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. In addition to Hansard and Irglova, the album features Frames members Colm Mac Iomaire (violin), Joe Doyle (bass), Rob Bochnik (guitar), plus guitarist Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen), pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), percussionist Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), horn players Steven Bernstein and Clark Gayton from Levon Helm's band, and others.
The Swell Season generated a wave of acclaim during the 2008 awards season including two Grammy nominations and an Oscar win for Best Original Song, for their hit single "Falling Slowly." The duo performed the song on the Oscars telecast, and Irglova provided one of the most memorable and poignant moments of the evening when host Jon Stewart called her back to the stage after a commercial break to give her acceptance speech.
The success of 'Once' also led to a sold out world tour for The Swell Season which was captured for an upcoming documentary. Hansard and Irglova will tour the U.S. extensively again this fall with dates to be announced soon.

Dead Weather Report...
Following on the successful heels of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, Jack White has now joined forces with Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) to form a rock band called The Dead Weather. The band’s highly anticipated debut album, Horehound, is available to listen to in full and for free, exclusively on iLike (the leading social music discovery service) for the next 24 hours at www.iLike.com/thedeadweather
In advance of Horehound’s July 14th release, fans can experience the album for the first time today, exclusively on iLike. Horehound was produced by Jack White on his Third Man Records imprint and was the first record to ever be recorded at his new Nashville-based studio.
The impetus for The Dead Weather came when Alison Mosshart’s band The Kills opened on a few US tour dates for The Raconteurs. Jack White was given doctor’s orders to take it easy on the vocals, so he invited Alison to sing a few songs onstage. Immediately recognizing the musical synergy, the trio devised a plot to record together during some down time in White’s own Third Man Recording Studio in Nashville. White then enlisted the addition of erstwhile Raconteurs’ touring accomplice and Queens Of The Stone Age collaborator Dean Fertita. What was initially imagined as a one-off collaboration for a 7” single release turned into a full-length album once the quartet switched on the recording tape.
