Beatles Thru the Roof 40 Years On...

Copy from the Telegraph:

Yes, it was 40 years ago today that Sgt Pepper and his band played live for one last time. Their music has hardly ever gone out of style in the four decades since and raised plenty of smiles from generations of new fans.

The afternoon of January 30, 1969 was when The Beatles surprised a central London office lunch crowd with an impromptu concert on the roof of their Savile Row Apple headquarters.

Before the outing was abruptly cut short by police who objected to the noise, the band (with a little help from young keyboardist Billy Preston) had managed to thrill Londoners on adjacent rooftops and the streets below with a run-through of songs they had been rehearsing with a vague album in mind. Their five-song set included Don't Let Me Down, I've Got a Feeling and Get Back - all considered classics in subsequent years.

The rooftop 'concert' was the first live gig since the band stopped touring in 1965 (tired of constantly screaming girls and frustrated by not being able to reproduce the more complex arrangements of their studio albums) and was to be their last.

Part 1 of 3 ("Get Back" & "Don't Let Me Down")

Part 2 of 3 ("I've Got a Feeling" & "One After 909")

Part 3 of 3 ("Dig a Pony" & "Get Back")

Ann Arbor Folk Fest Recap...

Just to get started......For those who attended the Ann Arbor Folk Festival last night, the line up did not disappoint. There is much to say about all the performers, but here are a few quick thoughts. Jeff Tweedy anchored the show, but really everyone was pulling their weight at Hill Auditorium.

I have video that I intend on posting shortly...keep checking back.

In the meantime, here is Jeff Tweedy's setlist:
Someone Else's Song (played at edge of stage w/o PA)
One By One
Spiders (Kidsmoke)
Everlasting Everything (new)
Solitaire (new)
IATTBYH
Wait Up
I Wanna Be Your Dog [The Stooges]
The Ruling Class
Jesus, etc.
Airline to Heaven
A Shot in the Arm
I'm The Man Who Loves You
-------------------------------
Acuff-Rose (played at edge of stage w/o PA)

The Carolina Chocolate Drops brought that southern, front porch funk & soul and blew the crowd away with their stripped down, but no less bumpin' version of Blu Cantrell's Hit 'Em Up Style...here is a video to get an idea of the originality that they bring.

Pontiac is Where RATATAT is At...

Electro-rock duo RATATAT are coming to the Crofoot! Sez the BBC: the music by these New Yorkers (Mike Stroud and Evan Mast)is "... awash with distortion-drenched melodies, punctuated by jittery clips, claps and clacks. ... Ratatat's unusual take on electronic-infused rock is intensely beautiful." When Ratatat blew into the music scene a few years back, many were simply in awe of their dynamic synth guitar arena club power beats. 'Classics' was an instant classic.

Oasis Documentary Takes it to the Streets...

Oasis - Dig Out Your Soul In The Streets

Starting last Wednesday, January 14th, MySpace Music and Oasis' MySpace profile page will be premiering an exclusive 18 minute Oasis documentary shot by The Malloys. It will mark the first HD debut of a documentary in the history of MySpace Music.

The Malloys - who have directed numerous White Stripes videos - followed Oasis last September in the lead up to the release of their number one album, 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

Liam, Gem and Andy traveled to the City of New York (nycgo.com) where they taught street musicians to play a number of the new songs. The selected street musicians came from all parts of the city, and had a variety of different ethnic, musical and creative backgrounds. The street musicians rehearsed and then performed the previously unheard new songs at locations throughout the City including MTA approved subway station platforms at Grand Central, Times Square, Penn Station and Astor Place, subtly premiering the album before it came out.

The Malloys followed Oasis and the street musicians through the process and created the 18 minute black and white documentary.

M. Ward First Listen on NPR...

M. Ward's Hold Time won't be released until Feb. 17th, but listeners can hear the entire album here on NPR Music as an exclusive preview, beginning at 11:59 p.m. ET Monday, Jan. 12th.

From NPR
The songs of singer-guitarist M. Ward seem to drift in on the crackling radio waves of a distant time. Warm and intimate, his largely acoustic and usually spare arrangements are a tribute to what Ward sees as the greatest era for American music: the 1950s and early '60s, when singers like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison infused country-rooted pop with honesty and romance. Ward's latest album, Hold Time, continues this tradition, with a gorgeously produced mix of finger-picked guitars, upright bass and shuffling rhythms, all tied together by his achy voice.

Album, Tour & Daytrotter from Ben Kweller...

Ben Kweller is back on the scene with an upcoming album & tour. To get you started, drop in on the Daytrotter site to hear his session & download the MP3s.

Slated for a February 3rd release, Changing Horses is Ben's follow-up to his 2006 self-titled work. Recorded mostly in Austin, TX, the title meaningfully marks a sea of change for Kweller. While his previous efforts have been stylistically restless, Changing Horses is a cohesive work, centered around Ben's affinity for country music. As he wrote to us at ATO Records this past November, the tracks on this disc "tell stories about life and love and desire and fear - people from the alleyways and roads unclear." Kweller produced the album himself, citing a "natural, warm beauty" inherent in the sound.

From Ben's website:
On February 3rd , 2009, the whole deal comes full circle with the release of a captivating album called Changing Horses (ATO). With Horses , Kweller returns to his small-town roots as he takes one of his own back-roads, country music, and makes it the main road. It's a collection of stories with a hymnal quality. The genre seems so natural that you think he's finally settled down, at least for one album. Rootsy songs from his past, like “Family Tree”, “Lizzy”, “In Other Words” or “Living Life”, make Changing Horses a natural progression in this gifted songwriter's career. His inviting vocals still guide the songs, creating the compelling intimacy fans are familiar with. “People are asking me, ‘why did you wake up and decide to make a country album?' To them I say, ‘I didn't. It's been in me the whole time, I just never put it on tape.' Friends heard me talkin' about Changing Horses for years. They know how much country music means to me - when Alan Jackson comes on the radio, somethin' happens inside. Brings me back to the trees, back to pushin' cars out of the mud. Reminds me of my hometown.”

The Red Bull Sound Clash Boston (on January 29th at The Roxy) experience features two bands – The Roots and Antibalas – with different music styles (Hip Hop and Afrobeat) facing-off on two stages positioned on opposite ends of the venue with the audience in the middle. In a series of four rounds, the bands perform various tasks—some rehearsed, some improvised—to showcase the range of their musical abilities. The audience participates in the back-and-forth exploration between the bands by judging each round.

Happy New Year to U2 & You Too...

As previously mentioned, U2 is back on the scene with a new album to be released in 2009. Q Magazine gives us the first exclusive look at what we might expect from these superstars of rock. Here is a preview. The magazine will also carry four in-depth interviews and a 30 page focus on the new record, No Line on the Horizon. Don't miss Q's mini-site, which features some exclusive cover shoot video, an image gallery (all featuring Bono with eyeliner). Initial reviews are strong with some (like Eno & The Edge) speculating that this could be U2's finest effort to date. That would be a pretty tall task. Keep an eye on U2's News on their website...I have a feeling the updates will be coming at a brisk pace in 2009.
