Playing For Change Deluxe Edition...

Playing For Change: Songs Around The World – Deluxe Edition, featuring the award-winning, previously unavailable full-length documentary film Peace Through Music will be released by Playing For Change Records/Concord Music Group on October 13th. This special two-disc package includes a 10 track “Songs Around the World” audio CD plus DVD containing the 84 minute documentary as well as 2 bonus chapters: “The Filmmakers’ Journey” (a 15-minute behind the scenes featurette consisting of interviews with project executive producer Norman Lear, directors Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls along with several other key members of the Playing For Change initiative) and “The Playing For Change Foundation,” focusing on the enlightening and inspiring work of the project’s remarkable non-profit organization.

With its stirring call for reconciliation and cross-cultural unification, the global music collaboration/multi-media project, Playing For Change has struck a deep and powerful chord world-wide. “Playing For Change is an exploration into the human spirit,” stated founder and film co-director/producer Mark Johnson. “It demonstrates the power of music to unite us as a human race.” “The project brings an insight into humanity,“ adds co-director Jonathan Walls. “It’s my wish that audiences around the world absorb this musical essence and become inspired to participate and celebrate its manifestation.”

A co-production of Timeless Media and Engine 7 Films, Playing For Change: Peace Through Music, is a story of hope, struggle, perseverance and joy. The version included here contains an additional 26 minutes of never-before-seen narration and performance, with scenes filmed in Nepal, India, New Mexico and Barcelona. The filmmakers traveled the globe with a single minded passion: to connect the world through music. Their ambitious journey took them through a myriad of cultures and visually stunning locations including post-apartheid South Africa, the ancient sites and conflicted regions of the Middle East, the remote beauty of the Himalayas and beyond. Using innovative mobile technology, the Playing For Change crew filmed and recorded more than 100 musicians, largely outdoors, in parks, plazas and promenades, in doorways, on cobblestone streets and amid hilly pueblos. The film, broadcast nationally on PBS this summer, spawned the intensely emotional video clip “Stand By Me,” featuring 37 musicians from around the world including now famous Grandpa Elliott, Roger Ridley and Clarence Bekker. It has been viewed by more than 30 million people to date on sites like YouTube and Vimeo sparking the global Playing For Change movement, one of 2009’s most unlikely and inspiring cultural phenomena.

The Playing For Change tour will stop at The Ark in Ann Arbor on November 2nd.

The White Stripes Concert Movie Teasers...

A great fan review from someone who saw Under Great White Northern Lights at the Toronto Film Festival:
I had the pleasure of attending the world premiere of "The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights" last night at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it was a fantastic event. The guests of honour included Jack White, Meg White, and Director Emmett Malloy, who watched the film alongside their fans (which made it hard to concentrate on the film, I might add).

Malloy's beautiful film takes the audience on a journey with the White Stripes as they complete their 2007 Canadian-wide music tour that included at least one stop in every province and territory in Canada. The film pays special attention to Jack and Meg's famous free side-shows that occurred in a wide variety of fantastic settings, from a city bus in Winnipeg to the Arva Flour Mill outside London. Audiences are treated to intimate back-stage interviews with the band, comedic interactions between Jack, Meg, and their fans, and never-before-seen coverage of some of the most action-packed, breathlessly amazing concerts ever to come to Canada.

Malloy seems to have had a knack of always being there with a camera at the exact right second, as scene after scene reveals the most beautiful, emotional, exciting, and downright bad-ass moments of the White Stripes ever caught on film. Fans will have a new-found appreciation for the White Stripes, as the passion and enthusiasm that Jack and Meg convey throughout the film are impossible to miss.

While this is an excellent choice for fans of the band, especially for those who were lucky enough to attend one of their concerts or shows, the film may be poorly received by others who do not have a full appreciation for Jack and Meg. But if you ARE a fan, get ready for the most electrifying, moving film of your life- you won't regret it.

Royal Bangs Tour Supports Let It Beep...

On September 15th, Knoxville, TN-based quintet Royal Bangs released their highly-anticipated sophomore album Let It Beep on Audio Eagle Records (U.S.) and City Slang (Europe). The album arrives on the heels of their self-released (and home-recorded) full-length debut We Breed Champions (2006), which caught the attention of Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. In May 2008, Carney reissued We Breed Champions on his own Audio Eagle Records. Royal Bangs will tour this fall in support of Let It Beep, opening for Carney’s new band Drummer.

The band recorded their sophomore effort Let It Beep at Tangerine Sound Studios in Akron, OH. The album was produced by Schaefer and engineered by Ben Vehorn (Love as Laughter). Let It Beep fuses two concepts: the electronic (thick synths and dance-y drum programming) and the pop/rock of the 1970s. Of the recording process, Schaefer says, “We were consulting a lot of 70s pop recordings for production ideas—Off The Wall-era Michael Jackson, the Bee Gees and Fleetwood Mac, among others…” Schaefer also cites Bruce Springsteen, Thin Lizzy and the Blade Runner soundtrack as primary influences.

Rakim Brings the Beat to Pontiac...

Hip Hop Heavyweight, Rakim, will be performing at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan on October 8th for a Seventh Seal Listening Party.

His first full album of new material in almost a decade, The Seventh Seal is Rakim's contemporary observation of the Hip-Hop culture he helped define. While staying loyal to his New York roots, the artist has created a body of work that encompasses the very best of regional, underground and mainstream styles reformed and delivered through his intricate lyricism and the seemingly effortless flow for which he is revered. The first single, “Holy Are You” (produced by long-time Rakim collaborator Nick Wiz for Preserve the Art) embodies the overall concept of the album, communicating Rakim’s worldview and spirituality through artistic interpretation of scriptures and revelations about the coming of the Apocalypse and each persons role in the world around them. Additional releases prior to the albums early Fall drop range from seething character studies of life in modern times and personal stories of self-awareness to feel good anthems celebrating music and Hip-Hop in all of its forms.

The artist states, “The Seventh Seal is my own revelation. . . my way of taking the best of what Hip-Hop has to offer, what we as a culture and a community have to offer, putting my stamp on it and leading us forward while constantly respecting what we’ve already accomplished. When you’ve been blessed with a career like mine, you develop a deep relationship with the music and that love is recognized by the true heads that share it with you. Holy Are You is for those core brothers and sisters. . . the first building block – the lyrical and spiritual piece – of an album that’s my monument to Hip-Hop past, present and future. You’ll see us keep building as we break through each Seal. . .showing the best of what I can do in many forms, bringing the energy and having fun, but first I’m laying that foundation and give my longtime fans the conscious fire they expect.”

This Just In From Devo...

From Devo's Myspace Page 9/15:

GREETINGS, SPUDS!

A new era is dawning for DEVO, comrades…and with it comes a fresh start for all of us.

As you probably know, DEVO has been working on a brand new album - their first in nearly two decades.
This means DEVO will soon be performing many live shows across the USA in 2009, and then worldwide in 2010. Tour dates will be announced soon.

We here at Devo, Inc. have been extremely busy preparing for this new era, working on a new online presence, new costuming for the band’s upcoming concerts, new merchandise designs, new fan club offers, etc.

For many years now, I have been serving DEVO in a number of ways – from creating DEVO’s web sites and providing content, and designing merchandise, to managing their ever-growing fan club. It’s been quite a lot to manage on my own, and I’ve been very fortunate to receive assistance along the way from many DEVOted fans (to whom I am forever grateful).

This new era of DEVO’s long career will bring with it a new batch of responsibilities for yours truly. Not only will I continue to work closely with the band on Web content, graphic design, etc., I will also be working with a team of comrades at DEVO’s new record label, who will be handling a lot of the technical work of Web site construction and maintenance. This will enable me to focus more on creating interesting content for the Web sites, including daily blogs & inside reports from DEVO events worldwide. The site will eventually be chocked full of video & audio content, plus blogs from me and the members of DEVO on a weekly if not daily basis.

In the coming days, you’ll notice some big changes at ClubDevo.com. We’ll be launching a brand new site – stripped down to the bare essentials for late 2009…introducing the world to DEVO’s new album, videos, etc. The full DEVO site will be reborn in 2010 with the gradual introduction of tons of content, old & new. The new online store will feature old favorites at first, and a selection of brand new items by late 2009/early 2010. The fan club is being completely restructured, and current Club DEVO registered members will retain their lifetime member status, with access to new fan club content.

The very popular Chosen Mutations and Signs Of DEVOtion online image galleries have been moved from ClubDevo.com to Devo-Obsesso.com. You can still send me your images for those pages, but it may take me a while to add them, since I’ve got a huge backlog of images to add already. Thanks to all of you who have submitted images in the past. The DEVO MySpace page will soon have a facelift, too….but I’m not sure exactly when.

Devo-Obsesso.com will soon feature a full report from the recent Hardcore DEVOtional 2009 Fan Gathering in Cleveland, Ohio. If you have any photos or video from the event, please consider sending to me via email or on disc to this address: Club DEVO, 702 Tyler Rd., Raleigh, NC 27604. I will be sure to credit you for anything I use in the report.

Now…onward, Spuds!
It’s going to be an exciting time for DEVOtees in the coming months…

DUTY NOW,

-Michael Pilmer
