Midwest Reggae Festival Set for Mid-August...

The Midwest Reggae Festival, one of the most enduring of its kind in the United States, has its 19th annual staging August 13-15 in Nelson, Ohio.

Third World, Mykal Rose, Luciano, the Skatalites and veteran British deejay Pato Banton are among this year's headliners. Dread Zeppelin, a band that plays reggae covers of songs by legendary hard rock band Led Zeppelin, are also on the card.

The festival was first held in 1992 by Packy Malley, a Nelson entrepreneur and reggae fan, who began promoting reggae shows at Ohio State University while he was a student there in the 1980s.

The Midwest Reggae Festival started as a one-day event at the Nelson Ledges Quarry Park where it is still held. Each day reportedly attracts a capacity 4,000-strong audience.

Jay-Z & Eminem to Play Detroit's Comerica Field...

From Jay-Z.com:
Two superstars, two stadiums, two concerts, two unforgettable events. In a rare co-headlining concert pairing, JAY-Z, who has scored more #1 albums than any solo artist in history, and EMINEM, the biggest selling artist of the 2000s, will share a stage with each headlining in his own hometown–EMINEM at Detroit’s Comerica Park and JAY-Z at New York’s Yankee Stadium. The Detroit show is set for Thursday, September 2 and the New York performance is scheduled for Monday, September 13. Both shows will be produced by Live Nation. JAY-Z and EMINEM made an appearance together earlier tonight at Comerica Park, where the Tigers hosted the Yankees, to announce the shows.

“This is a once in a lifetime set of shows and I know we’re both really going to bring it to our home towns” said EMINEM. “The fans are going to love this–and so am I. It’s gonna be historic.” Full EMINEM concerts have been few in recent years. His performance last October at the Voodoo Music Experience in New Orleans was his first full concert since summer 2005. His newest album, Recovery (Aftermath/Interscope), will be released June 22.

Said JAY-Z: “These shows are like a dream come true. I’ve always hoped that hip-hop could play any stadium like other genres of music. How perfect is it that Eminem and I get to play our hometowns and show how far the live rap experience has come? Fun and historic, a great combination all around the board.” JAY-Z is currently touring stadiums, arenas and festivals around the world in support of his latest #1 album, 2009’s Blueprint 3 (Roc Nation).

The Villagers Venture Out...

On June 8, Domino Records will release Villagers' debut album 'Becoming a Jackal.' Since releasing their first EP in 2009, this young Dublin-based group has already opened for Neil Young, booked multiple TV and music festival gigs across Europe, and been touted by the Irish press as "must-see" and "the most sought-after act."
Villagers made their U.S. debut recently with shows in New York City and at SXSW. Jon Pareles of the New York Times caught one of songwriter Conor J. O'Brien's solo sets in Austin and said, "With fast fingers, he plucked quickly alternating chords and ballooning, hypnotic crescendos. He has the particularly Irish gift, which he shares with the Frames and U2, for painful sincerity without mawkishness, and at times-this is high praise-he approaches the bitter romanticism of Leonard Cohen." NPR's Robin Hilton raved in a podcast that Villagers is "gorgeous... just amazing."

'Becoming a Jackal was recorded in Villagers guitarist Tommy McLaughlin's home studio, with Tommy engineering and co-producing alongside Conor. Conor created the album art and played all the instruments, except for the strings and French Horn which were arranged by Villagers pianist/organist Cormac Curran. From restrained to unleashed, from a whisper to a literal howl, 'Becoming a Jackal' mutates, intrigues and beguiles in equal measure.

They will return stateside in June for more dates.

Megafaun To Play Ann Arbor's Blind Pig...

Fresh off of an extensive European tour, the bearded brutes of Megafaun are on their first headlining tour of the United States, which began in late March.

Megafaun will be playing The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 13th. Sam Quinn offers support on this tour.

Brothers Brad and Phil Cook along with fellow Eau Claire, Wisconsin native Joe Westerlund, continue to tour in support of the group's Hometapes-released and critically-acclaimed second album, Gather, Form & Fly.

After hundreds of dates touring with fellow North Carolinians Bowerbirds, former bandmates Bon Iver, and likeminded live collaborators such as Akron/Family, Arnold Dreyblatt, and The Dodos, Megafaun is poised to bring their album and live show to U.S. fans, old and new on a headlining tour.

These shows will also serve as the first opportunity to hear songs from the group's upcoming third release, the recently-recorded mini-album, Heretofore, which Hometapes will release this summer. Speaking to Bryan Reed in a recent interview for Independent Weekly, Brad Cook said of the new, six-song, 36-minute recording: "I feel like it's the best hooks and lyrics that we've done"..."But it also has the most far-reaching stuff we've ever put on a record."

The Budos Band Blowin' Into Ann Arbor...

If you can't get enough of the funky horn, check out The Budos Band when they play at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor on July 13th.

"The Budos Band is the quintessence of Staten Island Soul. Their exciting new afro-influenced take on instrumental music has been captivating listeners from turntables as well as bandstands across the nation. Eleven pieces in all, their group consists of drums, bass, guitar, electric organ, two trumpets, baritone saxophone, and a percussion section employing bongos, congas, tambourine, guiro, clave, shekere and cowbell. Their music has been described as “compelling”, “unbridled”, “psychedelic”, “innovative”, and above all “soulful.” However, like many majestic things, their sound had humble beginnings."
