Stones Shine on the Big Screen...

April 4th marks the release of the Rolling Stones/Martin Scorcese film, Shine A Light. As Spring approaches, let's remember that no band has seen as many rebirths as The Stones. This movie was filmed at NYC's Beacon Theatre in the Fall of 2006 and will surely capture the energy of this legendary band up close and personal. In this area, you can get your satisfaction at the IMAX at Henry Ford Museum in Detroit or in Ypsilanti.

Matthew & His New Testament...

Spread the good word...Matthew Ryan will be performing at The Ark in Ann Arbor on May 15th. Another singer songwriter who has a memorable voice and intense lyrics. This tour has Matthew promoting a project & album called Matthew Ryan vs. The Silver State. An album by the same name is due on April 1st. The Ark will be the controlled performance space where you will want to take in his work.

The new album as described on the Matthew's site:
The first collection by MRVSS is utterly human; it muscles and floats through a very lucid rock N roll without pause or filler for all 11 tracks as if it were a Scorcese film for the ears. The mood of the record insists that the beauty in living is found in the fight to persevere against all that discount or betray you; and that the struggles inside the classic themes of living should be met with a square chin while reaching on tip-toes for heaven.

A Tune-Full Spoon-Full...

How about a nice heaping helping of Spoon. They will be coming to the Detroit area on April 6th to play at the Emerald Theatre. This band had a huge year in 2007 and they aren't showing signs of slowing down. They haven't grown complacent...in fact, they are releasing Don't You Evah,a new EP this spring on Merge Records (April 8th). Their show at Emerald Theatre will also feature The Walkmen & White Rabbits...so stir it up!

Great Dane Attack...

I first saw Teitur at Schuba's in Chicago in 2004. For those that enjoy simplified, acoustic music his songs are strong. His voice and his lyrics give him the emotional lift for a show that can just take your mind away. Teitur is from the Faroe Islands, which is considered part of Denmark, but he will be coming ashore to the U.S. in late April. His tour will bring him to Ann Arbor on May 13th for a show at The Ark...the perfect venue to hear his words. He will be touring with a full band on the release of his next album, The Singer (March/April 2008). Here are a few words from his Myspace page that give some insight into the latest work:
In mid 2007, Teitur started to pull together the songs that make up his third album: The Singer:

"The songs are written over a time-span of one to seven years. They are stories of events and experiences - like drinking beers on a musty hotel floor with mysterious blues musician Chris Whitley, before he died of cancer (Legendary Afterparty), or stories that I have come across in my lifetime..."

In October, Teitur travelled to an island off the coast of Sweden called Gotland with his sound engineer Jonas and arranger Trondur, and recorded the album on a 19th century Swedish Princess' estate, normally a summer destination as a hotel, but at this time of year a beautiful, windswept and somewhat deserted piece of tranquility; interrupted only by the various musicians and singers who came to play or sing on the album, who all stayed at the hotel, during their work on the album.

"This album was made in tranquility and isolation. The result is a very natural and somehow nordic sounding record. Furthermore it has similarities to a musical or a book of short stories."

Waiting For Superman...

Sam Duckworth is the aggressive vocalist/guitarist that makes Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. a special band. His latest effort, Searching for the Hows And Whys is due out this week. His music is described as a blend of emo & indie with a healthy dose of social consciousness. He has experienced increased success in his U.K. homeland...let's hope he can log some time with that cape of his and make it over to the U.S. sooner than later.
