Fields of Dreams...

The Everybodyfields, who have been getting a lot of love from the acoustic music world, will be playing for FREE at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Tuesday, May 27th. Might be a good show to test the waters and see if you like their sound. For what it is worth, Paste Magazine is high on this group. The Ark appreciates a non perishable food donation for their free shows.

Rock 'n Roll Call...

Artists & Musicians have been getting behind an organization called Headcount.
Here is a brief blurb about their future:

In 2008, we hope to send voter registration teams on up to a dozen major concert tours, registering 200,000 new voters. We also aim to become more than a voter registration organization, evolving into "the community organizing arm of the live music scene." Our mission is to give every socially-conscious music fan an outlet for his or her passions, working with artists and volunteers to stage political, environmental, and charitable activity throughout the United States.

R.E.M. on Austin City Limits...

R.E.M. will be on PBS's Austin City Limits on Saturday, May 24th. They taped this session back in March of this year. Head to the ACL page to see a performance clip & an interview clip.

Dailey Allowance...

That's right, you might as well think of music as a vitamin & be sure to get your fill every day. Will Dailey will be playing at Frankie's in downtown Toledo on Sunday, June 8th. His bio contends his sound has been compared to Jeff Buckley, Martin Sexton & Ben Harper...not bad company. In 2006, he won a Boston Music Award for "Best Male Singer-Songwriter".

Rare Air From Jandek in Ann Arbor...

What is there really to say about Jandek, other than this music, this mystery, this phenomenon is completely unique and it is unbelievable that he will be playing in Ann Arbor on Saturday, May 17th at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre. I first heard about this man by watching a documentary, Jandek on Corwood in 2004...unlike anything I have ever seen in music. Public appearances do not get more rare than this...Jandek makes Tom Waits look like a media hog! If you go, prepare to have your musical brain shifted, tested and re-strung. Thanks to Green Clothes Music for the heads up.

Silent & Kooky in Detroit...

According to The Silent Years Myspace page, they will be playing St. Andrews Hall in Detroit on June 3rd as the opening act for The Kooks. Haven't seen a confirmation yet, but it would make sense because The Kooks are playing in Chicago on June 2nd and in Toronto on June 4th.

Bon's Voyage to Detroit & Columbus...

Just noticed that Bon Iver will be playing at the Crofoot Ballroom (Pontiac) on July 21st & Wexner Center in Columbus on August 3rd. Yeah...every blogger under the sun has posted about this guy/band, but this is a case of worthy exposure. Still feel like Skinny Love has to be one of the best songs of 2008 so far.

The Roots of Your Soul...

Make no mistake...the foundation of Hip Hop & Soul remains strong and music fans were witness to that fact last night at Detroit's Fox Theatre. The Roots & Erykah Badu were in town on the first show of a tour leg that brought these two powerhouses together. The Roots are on the road promoting the new album, Rising Down while Erykah Badu is pushing her newest effort called New Amerykah Part 1 (4th World War). With a steady flow, they began to warm up, and once The Roots revived an old classic You Got Me, the audience came alive. Captain Kirk Douglas sang the "Badu vocals" on the track and then unleashed his guitar skills on the packed house. He began an improvised scat/guitar routine that took the performance to new heights...and stressing the point that these musicians have taken hip hop to a new level. Building on the frenzy, they then moved to The Seed (2.0) in a style that seemed to give a nod to the Motown sound and all the old school R&B that came before. At one point, the re-worked version twisted into Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up. All this energy erupted as Black Thought spit the fastest rhyme I have heard from an MC.

After a break, Miss Badu graced the stage with all her sultry swagger. Mezmerizing, captivating & alluring are all words that come to mind. Another pure voice that is a true gift to music. Mixing old & new, & accompanied by 4 back up singers, she had the audience under her spell from the start. For the encore, she took a bold step and removed her signature Afro wig to present a type of performance art piece that combined her dance skills with her lyrics. She even came down off the stage and walked into the audience, a move which brought the house to it's feet.

As if that wasn't enough to fill your soul, The Roots made their way over to a Detroit club called Confidential and had a listening party featuring Black Thought on the mic and Questlove in the DJ Booth with the ear goggles on.
