U2 Surprise Gig at Island 50th B-Day...

From U2.com:
U2 joined Senegalese artist Baaba Maal on stage as part of London's celebrations for Island 50.

Baaba and Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens) were sharing the bill at Shepherd's Bush Empire. The band joined Baaba Maal for a version of U2's 0ne to the surprise of the sold out crowd.

Introducing U2 Baaba said, "I have a friend a brother who really takes care of everything. We share the respect of Nelson Mandela's vision. We need people to understand. We didn't make it yet but we are on the way. As we continue fighting poverty especially on the continent of Africa".

As Bono. The Edge, Larry and Adam joined onstage.

The room was a glow with phones in the air as the crowd took pictures of this crazy moment. And then they started with a rousing chorus of One Love by Bob Marley.

NPR Stream Dark Was The Night Concert...

From NPR
NPR.org, May 28, 2009 - In a year of great music, the Dark Was the Night compilation ranks near the top, with 31 songs by artists writing and performing original works, including Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Yeasayer, Cat Power, Andrew Bird and many more.

More recently, on May 3, the collection spawned a one-of-a-kind concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

It was a truly mammoth undertaking. Though not all 31 songs from the record were performed, you could still hear David Byrne, The Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver, The National, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, My Brightest Diamond and Feist, often in unique configurations.

The lively dynamics of the night made for some wonderful pairings and odd duets: Feist and Bon Iver, David Byrne and The Dirty Projectors, David Byrne with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, The National with My Brightest Diamond and Sharon Jones with everyone.

Dark Was the Night is a 20th-anniversary benefit collection put together by the Red Hot Organization, which has been using the power of pop culture to fight AIDS since 1989. This particular compilation was brilliantly curated by twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, who also curated the concert.

McCombs Catacombs...

Cass McCombs is a working artist whose material has as many faces as there are "fat cities" that he's called home. Think of a parade of troubadours. Some of them are young, fresh-faced and mischievous, weaving fairy tales of innocence and idealism. Others are ragged, weathered poets, who's hearts in contrast are comforted more by religious ballads and bittersweet songs of betrayal. Nevertheless they forge ahead together, singing as one, united, all part of the same parade.

Since getting started out west, slumming it up north, working himself like a dog out east, making a go for it down south, doing his time over seas, and now living in the middle of the country where rock and roll was born, Cass McCombs has made a mysterious and mythological moniker, he writes songs for both the streets and the priests, the seers and the school children, friends and enemies, for suburban families and whatever's left of the ivory tower.

As of late, besides recording and writing, he's been working on developing esoteric artistic models which aim to unite the arts in these times of "corruption and perversity;" also his wife just got a cat who he nicknamed "Hi-tone".

Cass McCombs' new album, Catacombs, will be released on June 1st in Europe and July 7th in North America.

Elvis By Bono...

From the BBC:
U2's singer Bono reads his own poem, Elvis, and weaves it into an atmospheric sound-scape.

The poem, which sounds like the beat poetry of Adrian Henri, contains images from Elvis' life and his legacy, American history, and popular culture of the last 50 years from crooning to rap via rock and roll, from Valentino to television via Nixon and Lisa Marie. It is blended with archive material and recorded, specially-composed music.

Cold War Kids Go Interactive...

MTVMusic.com is the exclusive home for the debut of the Cold War Kids' hyper-interactive new video, "I've Seen Enough." The video, directed by Tool of North America's Sam Jones, (Wilco's "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart"), features four distinctly different versions of the song played by the band's four members. Each member was filmed on a darkly lit stage, playing their parts on vibraphone, guitar, bass, keyboard, standup bass, and more. These versions were recorded so the parts can be mixed together or played on their own.

Every change the fan makes happens in real time, including every stop, start, or mid-stream instrument change. Without skipping a beat, a fan can silence everything but the vocals and bring in the drums, or start with the full band, pull the keyboard and add the xylophone, or sweep away the standup bass at the last minute and cue the bass guitar for the song's closing notes. The remix possibilities are endless!

Reckoning Reissue & Bonus Due in June...

On June 23, 2009, Universal Music will release R.E.M.'s Reckoning - Deluxe Edition (I.R.S./A&M/UMe), a two-CD set, featuring the original album remastered, plus a bonus disc of a previously unreleased concert recorded during the band’s "Little America" tour at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on July 7, 1984 (broadcast on WXRT) (see the clip just below the news from 6-9-84 for a glimpse of R.E.M. Live circa Reckoning). In addition, Reckoning and R.E.M’s 1983 debut album Murmur will be simultaneously reissued on audiophile quality 180 gram vinyl in their complete original packaging.

On the Deluxe Edition’s bonus disc, the band performs eight of Reckoning’s ten songs at the Aragon as well as “Gardening At Night” from 1982’s Chronic Town EP and “Radio Free Europe,” “9-9” and “Sitting Still” from Murmur. The band also plays two new songs that had yet to make it onto tape: “Driver 8” which would later appear on Fables of the Reconstruction and “Hyena," later on 1986's Lifes Rich Pageant.

According to the press release for the reissue, "Inclusion of the live concert is particularly appropriate for the Reckoning - Deluxe Edition. Whereas Murmur had been complex and painstakingly deliberate, the band’s Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe, along with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, saw Reckoning as a "chance to turn up the volume, tear up the rule book, and capture instead R.E.M.’s on-stage mojo."
