Not only is Dave Grohl one of today's rock superstars, he is also one of the best stage banterers...always some hard driving music & just as funny lines coming from this frontman's mouth. Someone at the Austin City Limits Festival captured a funny exchange this past weekend. They closed the festival and proceeded to a Monday taping session of Austin City Limits (PBS) to be aired at a later date...can't wait for that one. The word is this band is planning on taking an extended break from the road...Too bad for all of us. I love the energy this band brings to the stage.
On the heels of Noel Gallagher's Canadian bum rush, Oasis has announced a dozen gigs that will take place in December. They will be touring in support of their upcoming album, Dig Out Your Soul (the first U.S. tour in 3 years). Ryan Adams will open the north american dates. Could we see version of Wonderwall that includes the whole lot? Or maybe they can all compete to see who can be the most dramatic rock star with an attitude.

For R.E.M. fans, this popped up on their site a few weeks ago:
For the past year, Matthew Perpetua, host of popsongs.wordpress.com, has written his interpretation of virtually every song in the R.E.M. canon prior to March 2007. It was a formidable project which concluded on September 9th with Matt's interpretation, appropriately enough, of "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." Though Perpetua promised his readers that he would eventually tackle the meaning of tracks from ACCELERATE at some point in 2009 after giving them time to gestate, he looked to be done with popsongs for now.
But lo and behold, a day after signing off, Matthew received a note that Michael was interested in answering questions from fans about the songs and lyrics. As of today, Matthew has posted the third of Michael's ongoing series of answers. It's fascinating stuff, no doubt, and if you've ever wondered about Michael's lyrics, now is your opportunity not only to read what he has had to say but to submit a question yourself.
To read the first, second, and third installments of Michael's responses, please click here.

Now, The National has stepped up to the plate to pledge support for Barack Obama by playing a FREE concert in Cincinnati's Fountain Square on October 16th. And if that isn't enough to get you fired up, Dayton's homegrown rockers, The Breeders will make the trip down I-75 to play the gig too. Either way, Obama can say he got the "National" vote. The band had this to say about their efforts:
You are invited to join The National and their fellow Ohioans The Breeders at a rally in support of Barack Obama and Joe Biden to be held on October 16th at Fountain Square in Cincinnati, Ohio (Located at the corner of Fifth & Vine Streets, downtown).
The rally will be held from 5-8 pm and will feature performances by The National & The Breeders and speeches to inspire Hope and incite Change. The show will be free to all. Ohio residents can vote early beginning on September 30th, so we’ve lined up charter buses to take registered Hamilton County voters to the polls on the night of the event.
Is there something poetic and obvious to say about the Smashing Pumpkins heading out on their 20th Anniversary Tour right after Halloween?...not on this blog there isn't (but the timing makes sense...right?). Is there a funny line about "leftover" pumpkins in November...not on this blog there isn't. But let it be known that this is going to happen...and we will see how "leftover" the whole thing feels. Apparently, they will be alternating playlists for performances with multiple show. Say what you want about Oasis, but they have participated in an innovative way to introduce the public to some new, unreleased material. They worked with many NYC street musicians including Dagmar, an underground rock duo that busks in the subways of New York & Boston. Both bands got together recently to rehearse the songs...and then...wham!...off to the subway Dagmar went...and by the miracle of YouTube...we can all see the goods. Love this idea.

John Rockwood is a Toledo homeboy & friend with a love for music, the blues, & rock photography. In some ways, his life mirrors parts of Almost Famous. Here is a great video that captures some of his story & his photos. You can see his amazing vintage work at Backstage Gallery. We are lucky to have a great rock n roll historian living in our midst. If you see him out, do yourself a favor and ask him about his early day in the hallways of the Toledo Sports Arena.

One fan has a strange way of showing his love for Oasis at the Virgin Festival in Toronto last weekend. Noel Gallagher gets bum-rushed during Morning Glory. Kinda crazy.
U2.com has the latest when it comes to rumors of the band's next release. Here is some of what Bono had to say...
'We’ve hit a rich songwriting vein and we don’t want to stop.' Bono has been talking to U2.Com about how the songs are shaping up for the new record and plans for 2009 to be their year.
‘This is our chance for us to defy gravity once again, ‘ explains Bono, calling in from a break in recording sessions in the south of France. ‘ We have what it takes, we have the songs, new rhythms and a guitar player who is not ready to re-enter earth's atmosphere until he's taken a slice of the moon! 'It's been fun, it's been maddening... there have been injuries and recoveries, no babies born that I know of, but this one is nearly ready for the new year of 2009.'
The band have been writing and recording the follow-up to ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ since last year, and the feeling is that they’ve hit a creative groove so there are no plans to stop. Everyone, he says, is excited about where the recording is taking them.
‘When we set out on this record it was Larry who came up with the plan not to have a plan. He put up this idea that wouldn’t it be great just to make music for its own sake, not for the purpose of a live show or on album but just to see what we’re capable of…’
It’s an idea that’s paid off. Following sessions in Morocco, in Dublin and through the summer in France, the band have written ‘fifty or sixty’ tracks. And counting.
‘We’ve hit a rich songwriting vein,’ he explains. ‘It gets a bit dark down here but looks like we've found diamonds not coal. I thought a while back we might have the album wrapped by now, but why come up above ground now if there's more priceless stuff to be found?
For now, they’re keeping a promise they made to themselves when they started writing: ‘We said to each other that if we got to the great place then we wouldn’t stop…’
So the writing and recording continues and while they now know what shape most of the album will take, they're not leaving the studio just yet.
‘We know we have to emerge soon but we also know that people don’t want another U2 album unless it is our best ever album. It has to be our most innovative, our most challenging … or what’s the point ?’
They have no doubts that it will be as important a release for U2 as any. ‘It’s a brand new chapter for us, and everyone we’ve played the tracks to has said that musically it feels like another departure.
‘The last two records were very personal, with a kind of three piece at their heart, the primary colours of rock - bass, guitars and drum. But what we’re about now is of the same order as the transition that took us from The Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby.’
He also mentions that the recording in Morocco was the first time the band have worked in a studio open to the sky: ‘On that track you can hear the sound of a swallows nest close to the building - it’s beautiful.’
Longtime collaborators Danny Lanois and Brian Eno have joined the band at different times, and, more recently, Steve Lillywhite – usually a tell-tale sign that a record is nearly done. ‘Steve has that ear for a top line melody and a good hook.’
But while Bono is itching to get the music out he says it’s going to be early 2009 when we first get to hear the songs.
‘I’m always the one who underestimates how easy it is to simply 'put out the songs now', if it was just up to me they’d be out already! But early next year people will be able to start hearing what we’ve been doing. We want 2009 to be our year, so we’re going to start making an impression very early on …’
