What Are You Waiting For...

So, the world must be coming to an end!...there is no other explanation for this tour...the man, the elusive, the reclusive, the explosive, Tom Waits has announced some tour dates. I guess there is a reason for his last name...cuz that is all his fans have been doing, if they want to catch a glimpse of him live (his last U.S. shows were in '99). This is rare, so it is worth the mention. He has some midwest dates that will no doubt sell out in mere minutes. His people will surely clamor for the chance to hear the mythical music man seated at a piano, with his crumpled hat hiding behind a cloud of cigarette smoke. If you go, somebody bring this man a throat lozenge, will ya.

OK... time for a story. That last date is very interesting, and I'll tell you why.

The Carney family hails from Akron. Jim Carney is a good friend of mine and his boy Patrick is a Black Key. Patrick's uncle—Jim's brother—is none other than Ralph Carney, occasional sideman and co-conspirator with Mr. Waits.

You may remember the legendary Tin Huey? That was Ralph's band. I witnessed a reunion show a few years ago at The Lime Spider in downtown Akron and it was wild. That very same night, The Black Keys made their first appearance on Conan in which Patrick wore a Tin Huey t-shirt for his Uncle Ralph.

So Tom Wait's is coming to Akron.... hmmmmm.
