A Murmur From the Past...

R.E.M. was a band that pulled my early music tastes in a whole new direction. Here is a look at their first television appearance, which was on Late Night With David Letterman (10/6/83). Was it that long ago? Anyway, I thought it was worth sharing. "Old School" at it's best...enjoy! And if it takes you back, add a comment about your favorite R.E.M. song...So. Central Rain always brings me to a complete stop.

Talk about the passion definitely rates up there for me as well but I am also somewhat partial to Driver 8.

Now there's another concert worth mentioning...you were there, weren't you? In that little college gynasium, circa. 1984? Tickets sold out so we paid guys 5 bucks to transfer their stamps from their hands to ours?...Oh wait...that was a school night...had a French exam the next day as I recall...Mike, Leigh, a couple girls... I guess you missed that one. Oh well, wasn't much fun anyway.
This album and Reckoning (South Central Rain) way up there.

Yeah, Betsy Esch was in our there with us I think. Wasn't that at Heidleburg College? I remember a great effin' show, and then when we found our way back to the Aquabomb which was parked facing down the slope of a hill (damn lush rolling hills of a college campus), I could not get the emergency brake off for what seemed a half hour. And it was a school night, and I remember Chris bitchin' about the test!

By the way, while I am yapping and no one is paying attention, let me say this: no one is more guilty of Early Work Syndrome than me. You know what I mean -- "yeah, it sounds pretty good, but it is nothing compared to their early work." For me, the list is endless of bands who got too cool for me. U2 is one of them, R.E.M. but have fallen the most in my eyes. From some point in high school through most of college there was nothing in my life more important than R.E.M. Anyway, why the long intro? Here's why: I pulled out New Adventures in Hi-Fi the other day, and have been listening to it during my commutes this week. Did I underestimate this album? Or did I never give it a fair shake? Whatever the reason, it is a helluva lot better than I remember.

But it is still no "Reckoning."

I am paying attention (from work, no less)...but remember, I did not go to the R.E.M. show....which I think was at Wittenberg....so why do you insist on dragging me the the rock n roll mud over & over. But seriously, I think Hi Fi is good, but we tend to attach music to a time period, complete with a cast of characters....I couldn't agree more about R.E.M.'s importance from H.S. to college. As far as Reckoning goes...I can just look at the album art alone and not play any tracks and it is better than Monster, Up & Around the Sun combined. Now Reveal is the only recent stuff I like quite a bit.
