CCD to Debut Theater Piece at Old Town School...

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are collaborating on their first theater piece, which will be performed at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music this November. Keep a Song in Your Soul: The Black Roots of Vaudeville was commissioned by Old Town, and explores songs written and performed by African Americans between 1830 and 1930.

The band is working with MacArthur Genius grant recipient and jazz composer-pianist Reginald R. Robinson and the Old Town School's jazz tap virtuoso Reggio "The Hoofer" Laughlin on this production. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, "More than 20 historic songs written and performed by African Americans on the legendary ‘Chitlin’ Circuit’ between 1830-1930 will be featured, as well as original music created for the production. Chicago’s Andrea J. Dymond will direct."

Keep a Song in Your Soul will make its debut on November 3 and run through November 6; tickets and more information are available at oldtownschool.org.

Watch a video of about the background of the music, as well as a performance from the piece:

David Wax Museum Plans Ann Arbor Visit...

David Wax Museum from Dylan Trivette on Vimeo.

See the David Wax Museum at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 9th.

Recently anointed as Boston’s Americana Artist of the Year (2010 Boston Music Awards), the David Wax Museum has been called “pure, irresistible joy” (Bob Boilen, NPR) and hailed by TIME.com for its “virtuosic musical skill and virtuous harmonies.” It is no surprise that its acclaimed performance at the 2010 Newport Folk Festival was hailed as one of highlights of the entire weekend by NPR. The Museum fuses traditional Mexican folk with American roots and indie rock to create an utterly unique Mexo-Americana aesthetic. Combining Latin rhythms, call-and-response hollering, and donkey jawbone rattling, they have electrified audiences across the country and are “kicking up a cloud of excitement with their high-energy border-crossing sensibility” (The New Yorker).

Pearl Jam 20 Screening at Michigan Theater...

A documentary directed by Academy Award-winner Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) on the band Pearl Jam that marks their 20th anniversary in the year 2011. Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band's formation, the chaos that ensued soon after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely-seen and never-before seen footage spanning the band's career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.

This documentary has a scheduled screening at The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor on September 20th (7pm & 9:45pm). Click here for more details.
